Biggar RFC AGM and the future

Season 2016/17

This has been another incredibly busy year/season for Biggar RFC at every age and stage.

The playing side is always full-on with as many as 16 sides representing the club on some weekends. There have been some fantastic successes along the way although getting those in their youth and those not quite still in their youth to play the game is a success in itself.

Rugby has SO much to offer.

Biggar RFC has so much to offer.

Off the pitch, the big excitement came in November with the opening by MSP Aileen Campbell (Scottish Government Minister for Public Health and Sport) of the new floodlit pitches - a magical night with rugby, football and athletics involved. The culmination of this 2-year project has been a huge boost to the club, allowing almost all training to take place at Hartree Mill and ensuring all players have much improved facilities to train and play on. Biggar's athletes and footballers have also benefited as they have their own local facilities to train and play on. As a result there is scarcely a midweek night when the pitches are not been used at some point.

There was also the small matter of midway through the season of changing the way the club is governed with, following an EGM, an application (still being considered) to become a charity. This has ramifications as to how the club is run and managed.

All of the above has made huge demands on the committee and, as a result, there is a pressing need for new faces to step forward to help in running the club. There are proposals to include the post of an additional vice president and to also look for others to come on board to 'shadow' those convenors who are currently in post with a view to sharing the work load.

In the coming weeks lists will be posted of all the current committee and the roles they fulfill. Anyone wishing to take up the baton and join the committee should then assess where they are perhaps best suited to serve, look for a proposer and a seconder and put themselves forward. There will of course also be the opportunity at the AGM to propose individuals for posts on the committee.

Committee work is rarely glamorous and carries a deal of responsibility with it but if you have been a player at the club and have the club's future at heart then this is your opportunity 'to give something back'. Of course rugby experience is not a prerequisite and several of the current committee have not played - their involvement comes from having seen what the club can do for people of all ages and following on from this seeing what can be done to improve the facilities and opportunities for players and the general membership and to help put Biggar RFC at the forefront of rugby development.

Rugby has SO much to offer. Biggar RFC has so much to offer.
