Girls in Glasgow

The U15 girls played really well but found fitness lacking a little as Cartha kept up the pressure. Bags of potential however with several girls playing just their first ever match!

Final score 54-5 defeat.

U18 Girls –v- Cartha 2nd September 2018

Biggar girls secure an emphatic win over a very competitive Cartha team.

Biggar girls travelled to Cartha for the second fixture in the current league campaign and gave a very satisfying performance to claim the victory. With the weather overcast and “muggy” and both clubs able to field good squad numbers the scene was set for what turned out to be a very entertaining and exciting game of rugby.

The game was very competitive from the start and for the first five minutes both sides were evenly matched with neither making much progress into the opposition half. However following a very good interchange between the backs it was Biggar who opened the scoring. Cartha however built pressure in the next period and scored a try of their own to take the score to 7 -5 to Biggar. Biggar sustained an injury at the scrum which disrupted the play somewhat but managed to regain the momentum and continue to play some very good rugby with none of the rustiness showing that had been evident the week before. With good play by backs and forwards alike Biggar managed to score a further three converted tries to take the score to 28 -5 at half time.

The second half continued in the same vein with Biggar forwards winning some good turnover ball through Rachel Philips in her new position, which allowed the impressive backs to cut good lines and maintain the pressure on the Cartha gain line. Whilst Cartha maintained their competitiveness they were not able to resist the intensity of the Biggar play and a further 6 tries were scored in the second half. This took the score to 60 – 5 and the referee brought the proceedings to a halt some 5 minutes early.

On the whole the coaches will be very pleased with the good decision making, good handling and strong defense shown in this performance, with the more experienced players, playing to their potential, which lifted the game of the younger and less experienced players. The coaches will want to work on ball retention at the breakdown which was one area that could be improved.

Biggar scorers: Tries - Emma Orr, Emelia Knights (2), Gerri Kimm (2), Feebi Robinson, Mariana Finlayson, Rachel Hill (3). Conversions – Kaylee Fraser (4), Sarah Denholm.

The score line in this match probably does not reflect the way the Cartha girls maintained their focus and competitiveness right to the end.

There is now a two week break in the schedule with the next game against Stirling at home on the 23rd September.

The U18's are pictured post match with their opponents - the spirit of rugby!
