Colts v West

Colts Lose Battle to West at Hartree Mill

Another tough game at Hartree Mill for the U18’s this week with West of Scotland the visitors. In a game punctuated by ill-discipline and a number of large scale skirmishes the team that kept their heads were always going to come out on top. As it was West showed a great deal of nouse in dealing with the charged atmosphere to win the game 41-7.

A great try from Will Kelly was the highlight of the game for the Rams. An initial break from Cameron Snell worked Biggar into the West 22. A number of rumbling forward phases with Hugo Baillie, Harry Archibald and Seth Jamieson in particular making ground into the West 5m area and leading to a penalty on the 5m line. A quick tap and Will barrelled over. With Rhys kicking the conversion Biggar had an early lead of 7-3.

It was a tight affair for the remainder of the first half. West Scored an unconverted try to lead 8-7 and right on the half time whistle, Biggar had them pinned in their 22. Some great play from Hayden marshalling his forwards and Cammy working the backs gave Biggar a real chance to take the lead at half time. Unfortunately a decision to go left instead of right led to the ball being lost to West who stormed up the pitch to score.

In the second half, West ran in 4 unanswered tries to take the game with a comfortable score line but this was not a fair reflection on the way that Biggar played. Some great runs from Ethan Webb had West in all sorts of trouble. Cameron Gray, Drew Brewster and Jack Balkwill also got the West defence turned and looked to be in on more than one occasion but a last gasp tackle or misplaced pass meant that a second score remained elusive.

A frustrating afternoon for followers of the home team. A keenly contested first half which just ran away from Biggar in the second half. Communication was better and a good work ethic across the team definitely on show for all and deserved a couple more tries in return. Real positivity from captain Rhys Thompson behind the posts too - urging more from all of his team - was good to hear.
