A win for the 18’s against Caithness

U18 Girls -v- Caithness 4th November 2018

The Caithness club made the long journey south to Hartreemill for the penultimate fixture of the Mirage league. The northern club were able to bring 18 players and so the game commenced in sunshine with a fresh westerly breeze in the favour of the visitors.

The Biggar squad had a nervy, hesitant start, strewn with errors and it was Caithness who had most of the possession in the initial period and opened the scoring with a good try after 10 minutes of play. The Biggar girls started to gain some possession although there was still a lack of control in their play, however they scored two quick tries mid-way through the first half to take the lead for the first time. Caithness however, were quick to respond and scored on the 20 minute mark to re-gain the lead. The next period was very competitive but Biggar managed a further score to take the score to 17-12.

There was then a significant break in play due to an injury to a visiting team player (Post match news that player had muscle damage) When play did resume Biggar enjoyed a sustained period of possession which led to two further tries. The score line remained unaltered till half time (HT 27-12)

Biggar started the second half with the wind at their backs and exerted pressure on Caithness which resulted in three further tries and was probably their best period of the game. Caithness scored a further try of their own to keep an interest in the outcome of the match. The play then became very scrappy with both sides making errors. The northern club then raised their game and despite some good tackling by Biggar they scored a try in the dying minutes to take the final score to 48-24.

The Biggar player of the match from Biggar was awarded to Kaylee Fraser, with Rachel Phillips being selected by Caithness. For a few of the Biggar girls this was only their second outing so a competitive game like this will have given them valuable experience. The coaches will be looking to cut out the errors and improve on the work at the break down ahead of the final league game away to Ayr on the 18th November.

Try scorers: Emelia Knights (2), Rachel Phillips (2), Kaylee Fraser (2), Lucy Blackie and Emma Orr. Conversions – Emma Orr (1), Kaylee Fraser (3)

Many thanks to Derek Aitken for filming the game, Tammy Mitchell for preparing all the food and to Mara Orr and Wendy Finlayson for helping in the kitchen.
