Mini v Ayr and Peebles

Well if I learned anything today, it's the fact that our boys relish their games.

Last Sunday's training hadn't exactly gone to plan with a lot of "maybe we should have ...." thoughts afterwards but as today showed, there's no cause for concern.

We started off extremely well against a vertically superior Ayr side. (I did wonder at one stage if a couple shouldn't have been with the P6's) This didn't put our boys off though and we proved, even if we need three players, we can still tackle the biggest!

There were some big hits going in but we found our legs driving up the middle and this paid off time and time again as we ran in trys. In the end, it was a high scorer but we won by two.

The second game against Ayr B team was a bit more open but again, the boys put to good use some excellent footwork and on each of these occasions were backed up by their team mates. We were slightly slower getting back on side and with Ayr being that bit quicker, we let a few passed that wouldn't normally have got to the try line. - I thought we just missed out in this match but i was pleasantly corrected in the clubhouse.

The last match saw us up against Peebles and as most squads experience, you have to have your wits about you! - We were tired clearly by then and it showed, mostly in some missed tackles where weary arms just couldn't pull the opposition in enough to bring then to ground but we still ran out victors by one try!

There were huge positives from today. The boys are a great squad together and this shows in play which far exceeds their years. There's some fantastic support work, an ability to read the opposition and adapt to their playing style and a willingness not only to involve their team mates but actively pull them into the action.

Each and everyone of them have their own strengths and what is so great to see is the recognition of that in the team ... who needs to get the ball to drive through the middle, who needs quick leg on the wing, who needs to hang back to make that crucial tackle...... and very little of that is coming from the coaches! It really is great to watch!

They should all be very proud of their efforts today! What a team!

Thanks as always to Gordon and Stuart for all their efforts. Laura and everyone on kitchen duties and to all the Parents, Taxi drivers and support at the sidelines although if Riki White isn't careful - he's going to be watching via videolink! ??

On a glorious Sunday morning at Hartree our P5s welcomed a visit from one team from Peebles and two from Ayr. As in previous weeks we were able to field two teams to form a mini round robin of games.

It was a day of mixed emotions, positive and negative.

Positives; the soup and burgers were excellent!!!

Seriously though, there were some individual performances today that were inspiring. It is our job as coaches to make this continue and to continue to nurture the talent in the rest.

Negatives; it seems that overall focus, commitment, the want to improve is lacking in some of our players.....
It is our job as coaches to improve this.

To use the words of a very good colleague we also had "good play but we weren't together, not alert and at times quite unaware that we were competing in games"

Our defence still causes us problems. We will continue to up the physicality in training as it is becoming apparent that we lack this part in a game scenario.

Please can we ask that all parents continue to involve their players in rugby talk and exposure, especially during these autumn internationals, as they will gain knowledge of the game that can only enhance their learning.

Huge thank you to the usual helpers as always, including all those who helped with the catering/serving today in the kitchen. Feedback from visiting teams was very appreciative!
