U16’s at Melrose: Scottish Cup

U16s road trip and Christmas cracker Part 1

So while most rugby teams get a little break over Christmas and players simply hope for a new pair of boots or their favourite teams jersey Biggar u16s were sent back to back road trips into the borders.

On 23rd December they headed down to Melrose to play on the hallowed turf of the Greenyards in what was (possibly unfairly) called a preliminary round of the Scottish Nation Cup as both teams had won five games out of six in their respective conferences to qualify.

The contest was nothing like a low key preliminary match. With the soon to be honoured Doddie Weir watching over his son play for Earlston/Melrose Wasps the game kicked off under overcast skys .

Biggar gained an early ascendancy and scored in the corner from short range through, Callum Smith with the try not converted. However soon after Melrose levelled the score. A long period of sustained Biggar pressure well defended by Melrose eventually brought a penalty in front the posts converted by Callum McCallum. Melrose having weathered a storm then gained in confidence and scored two good converted trys one just before half time.

With the score 19 - 8 at half time to the hosts the Biggar boys needed to refocus and convert their territory and possession into points.

In the second half the Melrose defence maintained their strength however Callum McCallum broke free from just inside the Melrose half and scored wide on the left, score 19 - 13.

Next a period of forward pressure created an opportunity for Cameron Gray to go over on the right. The score mid way through the second half 19 - 18.

With time ticking and tension rising Callum Smith made space, dodged 3 tackles and beat the full back scoring a fine individual try from inside the Biggar half and converted by Callum McCallum. 4 minutes to go score 19 - 25.

Some tight play closed the game out and Biggar edged out a competitive and free flowing Melrose side to progress into the last 8 of the National Cup.

Our thanks to our hosts and the spirit the whole game was played in.
