Mini and Youth rugby update Mar 24th 2019

Youth rugby

Sunday kicked off with a festival type game between U12 girls from Gala, Moffat and Biggar and their opponents Ayr. Despite the chilly conditions the girls stood up well and all learned a lot in what was their first really competitive outing. Well done girls!

Biggar’s U13 and U14 sides were in action at Dalziel where the honours were shared with one win a-piece. The U13’s have suffered badly from injury and unavailability of late and so they were loaned players by the hosts to ensure a match was played. Dalziel were comfortable winners.

At U14 level it was the complete opposite with Biggar proving to be too strong for the short-handed hosts.

The U16’s meanwhile were hosts to Boroughmuir. The city side was short of numbers and the game started with a series of Biggar players turning out in ‘Muir colours. Biggar ran out convincing winners in what was their final preparations for the Youth Cup final next Sunday.

At Mini level Currie was the venue, this always a well run tournament. Biggar had sides at every level and so it was a busy day. Results have yet to be confirmed but indications are that Biggar competed admirably at every level/age group.

Today saw us at the Currie festival where we faced some varied and tough opponents. Our game results were:
Currie black 5 Biggar 9
B/muir 10 Biggar 9
Currie Amber 8 Biggar 6
Dunbar 10 Biggar 11

In an overall veiw we played well in attack with enty of support and pace but sometimes lacking in width with the size of the pitch set out(that is the full regulation pitch size). Our slight down fall today was defence tackle height was an issue but more than that was we just cuddled the opposition rather than taking them to ground allowing fast offloads against us. I for one was a bit shocked by this as in previous we have had some great tackling play but for some reason today it just wasn't there.

I feel I have to mention it because its a elephant in the room but reffing could have been better and I'll leave it at that . I personally feel our players don't like a 3G pitch and that might have bared somthing towards the tackling issue aswell.

I would like to apologise for keeping everyone for such along time but the club wouldn't tell us anything (not for the lack of asking) about who won and awho didn't so we were in the dark also.

Newt week training has been cancelled to allow as many as possible to travel to support the U16's at BT Murrayfield, plz see previous posts if you or your player would like to help support.

P5 Currie Chieftains Tournament Report
Biggar took 11 players to this well organised and attended event. Whilst I don't have a note of all the scores we did come up against very disciplined (and big) opposition. A shaky start in the first game saw Biggar rise to the challenge in the second half and a narrow defeat was 'earned'! Our second game followed the same pattern but out last two matches showed real commitment, perseverance and results to match.

It was great to see all players developing, particularly keeping formation and your width on the park. Some of the passing / phases that was evidenced today were the best we have seen, so credit to all in keeping the ball and 'phase after phase' of play.

One area of play which continues to require focus is tackling. It is now very apparent that at this level, if tackles are not made, the opposition will and does score with ease. As coaches we will continue to assist in every way that we can but at the end of the day, every player will need to tackle...it is intrinsic to the game.

With the cold, wet and windy weather, it was decided to shorten the tournament to 4 games which I think all who attended would agree was enough!
