Ladies host Wigtonshire in thrilling match

Ladies Rugby is currently one of THE fastest growing sports in the UK. With that in mind, Biggar RFC is desperately looking to increase the Ladies playing squad numbers. Next season the Ladies will play in a proper SRU led league and there will be a real need for a larger playing pool.

There are several girls who will be making the transition to the senior game but a side with a balance of youth and expereince is the best answer. Coach Mark Senter will be on hand to provide excellent advice and coaching for all aspiring players.

If you are at all interested - regardless of experience - then please get along to Hartree Mill on either (preferably both!) Monday and/ir Wednesday evenings (sharp 7pm start).

Ladies v Wigtonshire

Also at home were the Ladies XV who played Wigtonshire with new coach Mark Senter at the helm. Another sizeable crowd thoroughly enjoyed the match which was one of two halves due to the very strong wind beating down the length of the pitch.

Biggar are still struggling a little with numbers but a series of phone calls and text messages led to a handful of players pitching up to field a full XV although rather embarassingly Biggar played the first 5 minutes or so with 16 players on the pitch! By that time the score was 7-5 to ‘Shire.

Among those who answered the call was Julia Miller (nee Howatson) who made a return to action after some 15 years absence and LOVED it!

‘Shire added 2 more tries before the break and led 19-5 at half time.

Playing with the wind on their backs helped Biggar a lot after half time and it seemed only a matter of time until they scored. With barrowloads of territory and possession Biggar were however beaten back and held up by some stout ‘Shire defence. They were actually over the line on at least 4 occasions but couldn’t get the ball down.

Biggar did eventually score however and took the lead with just minutes to go and by the narrowest of margins at 20-19!

‘Shire had hardly escaped from their own half of the pitch in this second period and with Biggar well up in attack as the seconds ticked away it looked as though Biggar would sneak the win.

Sport throws up some real cruel plays however and so it was this time round as the 'Shire scrum half, who had had a good overall game, broke through Biggar’s defence to run some 60m for what was, especially when converted, the winning score.

A great advert for the Ladies game however and coach Senter must have travelled home in the knowledge that he has a great nucleous of players to work with.

Biggar points: Megan McCarry, Bria Boyd, Rebecca Clark, Ioni McPherson.
