Midi Match Reports

Dalziel Tournament
In what was virtually the last competitive fixture for most of the Midi section, all boys travelled to Dalziel Park for Dalziel RFC’s annual Festival. This is the 20th year for this event and with again 100’s of youngsters involved it is one of the largest such events on the rugby calendar.
Blessed with great weather there was hours of action on a busy day which began at 10am and ran through until after 4pm.
Pride of place must go to the boys from the S1 and S2 sections who, having managed an excellent win as a combined side in the schools tournament on Friday, returned full of confidence on Saturday. Separated into different competitions on Saturday both groups came top of their respective piles to win the Dalziel pennants and medals.
All involved deserve great credit for their efforts. Especial plaudits to P7 member Seb Potter who answered the call of the S1 section and played ‘up’ an age group, collecting a brace of tries and putting in some great work in all games during the day. On the other hand commiserations to S2 member Jack Warnock whose influence will be missed on Tuesday after a nasty shoulder knock which saw him play just a few minutes on Saturday.
These successes round of the season almost perfectly….although the icing on the cake would come in the shape of another victory for the school S1/2 XV which take on Coatbridge on Tuesday 11th. Could the venue, Dalziel Park, be a happy hunting ground again?
The U-15 group finished in 3rd place, one better than last year while the Colts after a thoroughly enjoyable day out, finished as runners up to Dumfries.
As yet there is no news of the U-16 group.
2/5/10
The S1 squad were in action against a very much depleted Cumnock side. While it was good to get a final run out prior to the Dalziel tournament this weekend there was disappointment that the game was a mix-and-match with several S2 players filling in for the visitors. Thanks to them for that.
Biggar 54 Cumnock 20.
This was the last game at home for the S1s and saw Cumnock travel to Hartreemill with just 8 players - one of whom was inured in the warm up! In order to get the game played competitively, Biggar agreed to supplement the visiting side with players Lee Hardie, Adam Gibb and Keiran Jardine. Played in 3 x 20min and refereed by Ian McKeand the conditions were perfect for running rugby. Biggar started well and were quick to score with a break from the Cumnock 22 by Robert Hall. The second score came after a Martin Hunter break from the half way line. The third try was the pick of the day and followed from some very good interplay involving Richard Morgan, Barr and Mark Harrison who sent Morgan under the posts.
The next 3 scores, by Simon Denholm, William Greive and Gregor Stewart were converted by Stewart and Barr. The fourth conversion was well kicked by Barr from the 22m line at an angle and cleared the crossbar with plenty to spare!!
2nd Third
Biggar exchanged Denholm, William Greive and S2 player Alistair Sinclair.
This was the usual Biggar…. the restart seeing them lose 3 unanswered quick scores ( mainly set up by the Biggar players who played with extra vigour and speed!!)
The next score was Biggar - Mark Ewart bursting through the cover defence in a typical breenging run with Harrison and Adam Orr in support. Stewart missed the conversion - again - from in front of the posts.
Cumnock scored from the restart and the last score of the 3rd by Robert Hall came after a run from the 22. James Barr left the pitch with rib damage and this was the last we saw of the standoff.
Final 3rd M.Harrison , M. Hunter and L.Hardie Playing for the opposition
Cumnock scored from the re-start due to 3 missed tackles ( the 'encouragement'/language from the sideline let the Biggar team know exactly what the coaching staff thought).
After this verbal attack Biggar scored a total of 7 unanswered tries, these from Gregor Stewart (who converted 4), 3 tries from Robert Hall, 2 by Richard .Morgan, 1 by S.Denholm, 1 by William Grieve. Well done to everyone especially Robert Hall scoring 5 tries. The game was played in good spirit and enjoyed by all the spectators.

S2
The S2 squad travelled to participate at Uddingston's tournament
Biggar 0 Dalziel 0
In a hard fought 17 minutes, neither side were able to put any points on the board, however from a territory position, Biggar did have the edge.
Biggar 0 Uddingston 7
From the outset Uddingston set the pace of attack and despite some excellent defending they were unable to stop the from putting the first points on the board after 5 minutes.
Despite some excellent running from Anderson, Blackman & McAllister, Uddingston time and time again stopped Biggar just short of the line. Tension was running high on both sides and this lead to a number of off ball incidents which the Ref failed to adequately control. With 5 minutes to go Uddingston ran in a second try. Just shortly after this, the game was abandoned when Adam
Stott sustained a head injury which would require stitches.
Biggar 10 Hamilton 0
Having had time to rest after the Uddingston game Biggar dominated the game
against Hamilton keeping them well and truly contained within their own half.
This game saw tries run in by Calum Campbell and Daniel Blackman.
Scorers : Tries - Calum Campbell (2) Daniel Blackman (1)
Conversions - Jack Warnock (1)

S1 Biggar 3 v Gala 27
The squad had a very busy weekend with a team entered on Saturday at Hawick Sevens before this game against Gala.
The jaunt to Hawick had involved 4 round robin game against strong border sides, many of them again proving much larger physically than the Biggar squad. In addition games were of 2 x 5 minute halves and so the team to score first held a big advantage. As this group are consistently slow starters, things were always going to be tough and so it proved, Simon Denholm Biggar's only try scorer with a brace.
Gala ended up winning the tournament and so it was a strong side which travelled to Hartreemill on Saturday. Able to play at the Showfield - or at least just able to play, as the pitch has dried out so much in the last fortnight as to leave places almost unplayably dry and hard - Gala were quickly into their stride with some strong, direct attacks and some very elusive running. Three tries were conceded in the first period and while James Barr made an excellent break to score after the turn around it was Gala who finished the stronger side, running in 5 tries in this period.
The side now has 2 weekends remaining, with Cumnock visiting on the 2nd May and then a tournament at Dalziel on Saturday 8th.

S2 : Biggar 11 Gala 21
Biggar got off to a flying start and following a driving maul carrying the ball over the line within the 1st minute of play. It was as the ball was touched down Biggar noticed that there were 16 boys on the field and accordingly a restart was called for by Gala.
From the restart, Gala capitalised on a Biggar squad that were still trying to workout what had happened and within 45 second had put their first points on the board. Biggar came straight back with a run from Anderson who ran the ball under the posts. The remainder of the 1st half saw Gala continue to benefit from handling errors and at half time they had scored a further 3 tries.
Gala opened up the scoring in the 2nd half but the Biggar did not give up with Warnock getting over the line in the corner to give himself a difficult kicking angle. A further try from Anderson gave Biggar some hope, but with the clock ticking down a Gala defending well the gap was to much to close.

On Sunday the S1 and S2 squads travelled to Glasgow for Glasgow North Festivals. Drawn in what were effectively the 'top' pools of 4 the Biggar sides played Ayr, West and Glasgow Hawks.
All three sides had previously triumphed over Biggar at S1 level, and so it was clear that it would be hard day's rugby.
First up for the S1 group at Hughenden was Ayr, and ironically it was against this side that Biggar played their best rugby of the day. As has been the case so often this season, the main difference between the sides has been the inclusion in each of their opponents of one or two very large boys whose contributions have been hugely influential in the game.
Biggar conceded two tries with one being converted. Their was precious little opportunity to attack and so Biggar were forced on the defensive for much of the game, a task they accomplished with some success, Ayr being held up over the line on at least 4 occasions.
A 2-hour wait between games did nothing to help preparations and it was a very different side which faced West. The Glasgow side are a well-organised unit but the boys struggled to find any form at all, with dropped passes and missed tackles very much the order of the day.
Turning around at 0-0, Biggar were unable to stop West running in two tries after the break and with one being converted they lost 7-0 again.
Game 3 saw Hawks as opponents, this side also on the wrong end of two defeats. In a great first half Biggar managed to score their first two tries of the festival, one from Murray Potter (welcome back Murray!) and the second from the ever-alert Richard Morgan whose pace was, as ever, a massive factor throughout - one textbook covering tackle on Ayr's 'big man' undoubtedly one of the Festival highlights!
Unfortunately they could not stop Hawks scoring twice in the second half and so the game was tied at 7-7, Biggar's tries converted by James Barr and Gregor Stewart.
A big thanks to the families who came to support on what was a long day and well done to newcomer Lee Hardie for what was a very difficult debut.
Training as usual midweek but nothing next Sunday.
The S2 squad played at Cartha and fared a good bit better. Ayr were put to the sword by 6 tries to 1, while West were also beaten 3 tries to 1. Hawks proved to be the strongest side in the group and beat Biggar by 4 tries to nil.

S1
Biggar S1's travelled to Strathaven on Sunday. When the sides met earlier in the season Biggar recorded a fine win and it was much the same this time around, Biggar's squad getting the better of their hosts who had a side made up of S1 and P7 players.
Tries were scored at regular intervals although as many were squandered as handling opportunities went a-begging on many occasions.
For the record Richard Morgan (4), Stewart Manock (3), Simon Denholm, Mark Ewart, Robert Hall, Thomas Steele, James Barr, Martin Hunter, Mark Harrison and Gregor Stewart all scored tries while James Barr (6), Gregor Stewart (4) and Alistair Sinclair once again shared the kicking duties.
This weekend sees the S1 and S2 sides journey to Glasgow to take part in Lanarkshire festivals. The S1 side at Hughenden, the S2 squad at Pollok Park will take on Ayr, West of Scotland and Glasgow Hawks.
The day is to be run on a 'festival' basis where 'participation' is the main aim and where 'winning' while certainly encouraged is not the be-all-and-end-all of the day.

Bowl Quarter Final
Morrisons Academy under 15 V Biggar High School under 15
Biggar High School's under 15 rugby team had waited weeks to fulfil this quarter final tie with Morrisons Academy, It had been postponed on three occasions thanks to the weather. However today the weather was perfect for rugby.
Biggar had five S2 players in the squad, two were on from the start (Danny McAllister and Adam Richardson).
Morrisons kicked off, Biggar secured the ball and went on the attack, Morrisons were immediately on the back foot however they were tackling in a determined manner. There was a series of 3 scrums in quick succession and it was obvious that the Biggar pack held the advantage. Ten minutes into the game it had been all Biggar pressure, the pack securing good ball to be fed to the backs. There was a few handling errors which halted some good flowing moves. The rolling maul was utilised to good effect making good yardage for Biggar. All this pressure eventually paid off as Paul Davidson made a determined drive over the line breaching Morrisons defence for the first time. Mark Bertram converted the try.
Morrisons then managed to exert some of their own pressure on Biggar, it was the first serious venture into the Biggar half. Biggar ended up defending a penalty 10 yards from their line, Morrisons ran it in determined fashion, Biggars defence repeatedly stood firm, the ball was turned over and Mark Bertram coolly kicked for touch,,, pressure off.
Biggar regrouped and went about piling the pressure back on Morrisons and with some very strong running Ryan Anderson got Biggars second try. This was not converted.
The Morrisons Players were given a glimmer of hope that they could turn the game around however this was snuffed out when Biggar were awarded a penalty close to Morrisons line and Hamish Wallace tapped and passed the ball to Paul Davidson who was in full flight ensuring that the game was secured with their fourth try. This was converted by Mark Bertram.
Tom Stott was replaced by Jack Warnock towards the end. Morrisons continued to show spirit and stuck to their task right up to the final whistle.
A very good cup (ok bowl) tie, Biggar were just too strong for Morrisons in the areas that counted.
12 Andrew Stumster, 13 Danny McAllister, 14 Adam Richardson, 15 Richard Adams. 16 Scott Smith, 17 Jack Warnock 18 Adam Stott.
7/3/10
The trip to Hawick was never going to be an easy one with this being only our second game in 14 weeks as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
Within the first few minutes Hawick had put their first points on the score sheet getting the ball out wide to one of the fastest boys on the field who showed the chasing Biggar pack a clean pair of heels.
This was the first of many tries run in by the same boy who consistently outpaced even our fastest runners. The scoreline however, did not show the effort put in by Biggar who had a total of 5 tries classified as being held up. All 5 of these coming from some excellent driving by a hard working forwards pack.
Despite Hawick having an unassailable lead, the Biggar boys did not give up and continued to take the game to them up until the final wistle.
Scorers : Tries - Danny McAllister (2) Daniel Blackman (1) Reiss Cullen (1)
Conversions - Jack Warnock (3)
It was the end of November when they had their last league game thanks to the snow and frost. The boys had not been idol during this period as they had been paying to hire an indoor riding arena each week so that their fitness and ball handling were honed, and they had also been working on some cunning little moves for when the weather got better. They had also travelled south over the border for a weekend and got two games under their belt in Yorkshire.
They were all chomping at the bit to get back into the league again and so were all looking forward to hosting a Hawick team that this team had never beaten before in previous years.
Just about a full squad meant that Head Coach (Jim Wallace) and Director of Rugby (Ivan Stott) could pick there strongest 15 to start, and a good start they made by taking the game to Hawick and making sure that most of the early play was in the opposition half. Good handling and running were strongly repelled and as the game went on Hawick started to stamp their authority in the forwards by mopping up any loose ball. They were masters of their own lineouts and started to steal some of the Biggar throws. This they moved out to a couple of strong centres to run with but Biggar stayed firm with some committed tackling.
Due to the fast and hard fought nature of the game the Biggar squad was being rotated as players picked up knocks and needed attention, but all stood firm and supported each other due to the tremendous team spirit that they have built between themselves.
The game ebbed and flowed with neither team being able to breach the opposition defences. Biggar again got the upper hand as the forwards again started to exert pressure and the ball was being moved about and starting to stretch the opposition in places. Mid way through the first half Biggar made good yardage up the pitch and when awarded a penalty Mark Bertram had the sharpness of mind to take it quickly and burst over the try line for a superb opportunist try.
Hawick were not down hearted and kept pressurising with some strong running which sometime was only halted with some brave last ditch tackling, until their quick centre got the ball in space and scored in the corner for an equalising try.
Half time came with the score at 5 each, and with encouragement from the coaches the boys went out for the second half with full hearts. Again both sides were very committed and an excellent game ensued. Mid way through the half the forwards got the ball on the opposition 25 and pushed their way up the pitch. This was something that they had been practicing and it was brilliant to see them executing what they had learnt on the training ground.
Unfortunately they were unable to ground the ball, but this seemed to give them even more confidence as shortly after quick ball from the scrum was picked up by Paul Davidson, who with many of the opposition hanging on to him got brilliant support from his team mates and was helped over the line for a try which Gavin Parker duly converted.
Although Hawick then tried their hardest to come back Biggar held their own and were jubilant when the final whistle went for a brilliant hard earned victory.
This keeps Biggar on top of the table. There are two teams following with games in hand but this win means that Biggar are guaranteed third place (as Hawick cannot now match them) and mathematically with one game left could get second place. If at the beginning of the year someone had said we would be in this position towards the end of the season, they would not have been believed. Well done everyone, but there are still points to be played for so I am sure the coaches will keep all the boys focussed.

Cumnock 23 Biggar 29
Biggar picked up this game late in the week and because of the holiday weekend travelled with just 12 players. This is the first time the clubs have met but on the evidence of this encounter at least it will not be the last.
The Ayrshire side were also short-handed with just 9 available players and so to even things up a little Biggar 'lent' Cumnock a player for each 3rd. Martin Hunter, Gregor Stewart and James Barr all volunteered their services and all are to be congratulated for doing so, it being much better to get a game than to play a 9-a-side game and have players standing on the touchline.
In the first and second thirds Biggar were dominant, running in 7 tries. Cumnock managed 1 in reply. In the last third however and due in no small part to the presence of Barr, the Ayrshire side came right into the game, recording no fewer than 6 scores to get within 1 try of the Biggar total. Biggar were hampered by injury to Richard Morgan and Mark Harrison both of whom had to leave the field but all Biggar players must heed the lesson from their team-mate of how to win and secure ball!
Tries : Morgan (2), Lewis Barrie (2), Mark Harrison (2), Mark Ewart, Martin Hunter.
Conversions : from Barr (3) and Stewart (2)

U-16's v Haddington
The U-16 side recorded their second win on the trot against a competitive Haddington XV. In what was a fairly tousy match the Biggar youngsters managed three tries to one.
S1/2's
With Dumfries calling off midweek the s1/2 sections got together for a training game. This was a conditioned game with the sides divided so that one set of backs played with the toher set of forwards. This gave all an opportunity to compete and contribute.
Altogether although again play was at time was scrappy, there was some very good play and inter-passing. Both sets of players and coaches will have benefited from the game with many showing up much more prominently than has been the case in their age group games.

U-16 : Biggar returned a rare win on Sunday against their
S2 : Whitecraigs 7 Biggar 0
Biggar travelled to Newton Mearns for their first game in 8 weeks following the enforced extended break due to adverse weather conditions.
Whitecraigs took the lead within the first minute of play, however, this was the only time thereafter in the first half that they were out of their own half with Biggar dominating the play, but unfortunately failing to score.
The second half saw Biggar continue to be frustrated with some excellent defence by Whitecraigs and again one of their few trips into the Biggar half saw them extend their lead. As is often the case, the final score did not reflect the effort and domination shown by Biggar.
S1 : Biggar 24 Strathaven 17
There was some early morning concern as the side contemplated the snow covered pitches at Hartreemill but the S1 side is made of stern stuff and all were desperate to get a game after the recent long break.
Having elected to leave the by now green pitches at Hartreemill, Biggar and their guests were amazed to find that The Showfield, just over a mile away but obviously many feet higher, still had about an inch of snow lying…enough to have Kiwi coach Jason Kelly hard at work with a shovel to clear the lines!
Strathaven turned up with just 10 players but with an encouraging turnout of 16 players all of whom were ready and willing to help out a full 13-a-side game took place.
The cold certainly had an effect on proceedings the ball at times resembling a bar of soap as it squished out of cold fingers, but all boys who played deserve great credit for their efforts in difficult conditions.
Biggar stormed into an early lead and looked to be working toward a comfortable victory but Strahaven came right back into the game to tie the scores at 17 each before 2 further Biggar tries took them clear. The scores included a notable hat-trick from Stewart Mannock, while Mark Ewart, Murray Potter, Lewis Barrie and James Barr also scored tries. Barr and Gregor Stewart (2) as usual shared the kicking duties.

S1's
Biggar S2's were without a fixture on Sunday as their opponents Currie could not raise a fit X squad and so the spotlight fell on the only other Midi age group playing, namely the S1 squad who did manage a game against their greatest rivals, Currie.
The Currie squad are unbeaten this season to date. Given that they draw from some of Edinburgh's 'top' private schools it is perhaps not altogether surprising.
Very pleasingly however, and although Biggar still lost out (by 24-3), the whole squad can take great heart as they lost out by a real barrow-load on their first meeting at Malleny Park earlier in the season (the score then was 45-0).
In striking with the first try - courtesy of prop Mark Ewart - Biggar scored a moral victory and congratulations to all who played their part in the lead up to the score.
Sheer pace is such an advantage however, and this Currie squad have that in abundance, long end-to-end breaks rounding off any attack phases which Biggar managed to have but which were lost after poor hands/poor kicking.
Despite the early score Biggar lost out but much take credit for their efforts!

Biggar 11 : Murrayfield Wanderers 6
The biggest challenge faced by both teams was the cold wind and sleet. Murrayfield took the game to Biggar from the outset however the pairing of Danny McAllister and Calum Campbell proved too great for the opposition with two tries in the first half being run
in following handling mistakes cleared by McAllister and subsequently passed to Campbell to run over the line. Biggar were caught sleeping at the start of the second half and within 30 seconds of kick off, Murrayfield had put their first points on the board. Biggar came straight back into the game with McAllister running the ball over the line from halfway having avoided a number of
attempted tackles by a chasing Murrayfield pack. Murrayfield kept up the pressure and after a prolonged attack just short of the Biggar line, managed to break through the defence under the posts.
As the weather worsened, the relief on both sides was evident when the final whistle blew and the players quickly made their way back to the clubhouse to get some welcomed heat.

S1
Linlithgow 23 Biggar 11
The S1 section managed to pick up this fixture when it was discovered that Murrayfield Wanderers had no age group side.
This was a valuable fixture then and despite the fact that Biggar travelled with the bare bones of 13 players, the side performed well after another shaky start. It seems that the boys need at least 20 minutes of game time before they begin to play!
Playing against the considerable breeze Biggar conceded three early scores, all of which were converted to make the score 12-0. Although the Biggar side had competed, most of their play had centred around defensive tackling, some of which was of the 'touch' variety.
Having turned around to play with the wind Biggar's cause was hampered with an injury to newcomer Murray Potter who sustained a cut to his eyelid. Though quite determined to return to the fray he was rightly sidelined! Very sportingly Linlithgow dropped a man from their side to even up numbers.
Biggar took great heart from a try by Lewis Barrie who, when he gets going, is a difficult man to stop. The conversion to this try was missed but Gregor Stewart kicked his conversion after a solo mazy run (a la Welsh wizard Shane Williams) by scrum half Richard Morgan.
Stewart then took a quick tap penalty to run in for a third Biggar try that James Barr managed to convert.
Unfortunately Linlithgow also managed a score in this period to maintain a 4-3 try lead.
Turning around again for the third period Biggar were once again up against things but to their great credit they managed to restrict their hosts to just two tries. They also showed some good touches with Robert Hall, Stuart Manock and Leighton Garrett all showing up well with ball in hands. Mention too of a much-improved defence with Morgan and Simon Denholm to the fore.
22/11/09
S2 : Biggar 30 : Hamilton 0
In a game which saw the majority of play take part in the oppositions half, the scoreline did not reflect the effort put in by Hamilton who on 3 occasions had excellent runs and got within a few yards of the Biggar line. It was however pleasing to see Biggar display a strong defence and manage to turnover and convincingly clear the ball.
It was particularly pleasing that for only the second time this season, we saw the names of two forwards, namely Jack Forster and Keiren Scott on the scoresheet. This was testimony to the greater involvement of a number of the forwards in this game and hopefully this will spur all the forwards onto greater involvement.

All other games on Sunday were postponed due to the weather so this meant another blank day for the Minis who were scheduled for a trip to Watsonians in Edinburgh.
15/11/09
On Sunday Biggar Midi section hosted teams from Dunbar (U16) and Uddingston (S1 and S2).
In marked contrast to the previous day these games went ahead at The Showfield, the pitches there in great condition and contributing well to the days play.
First up were the U-16's who are gaining in strength each week but who just lost out to Dunbar.
In the afternoon, Lanarkshire visitors Uddingston brought two sides with the S2 side losing out by a try and conversion in what was a tight yet very entertaining fixture.
The S1's recorded a fantastic win over their opponents by 30-11. This was the teams second win on the trot and undoubtedly the best this season as it was conceived from some excellent team work by all involved.
Tries were scored by Richard Morgan (2), Mark Harrison, Andrew Orr, Mark Ewart, Leighton Garrett, Stuart Manock and James Barr (who also kicked 3 conversions). Gregor Stewart also notched 3 conversions. Only 8 of the squad ended up on the scoresheet but ALL deserve great credit for their efforts as every player rose to the challenge and performed well.
S2 Biggar 10 : Uddingston 19
This was only the 4th game of the season for Uddingston and with their coaching staff painting a picture of a lack of match fitness, on paper this should have been a game that should have gone in our favour. However, from the outset it was evident that it was not going to be an easy encounter with Uddingston showing a hunger for the ball, something that was missing in the Biggar squad.
At half time Biggar were trailing by one point following tries from Jack Warnock and Ryan Anderson. The most obvious difference between the two teams being the lack of involvement by the Biggar forwards at the breakdowns. This was an area that Uddingston were dominating.
The second half saw a strong Uddingston defence keep Biggar from crossing the try line, despite a number excursions within 5 yards.
It was apparent that a number of the Biggar players were getting frustrated by the strong defence shown by Uddingston and a number of mistakes were bourne out of this, which they were able to capitalise on scoring a further two tries which were subsequently converted.
Scorers : Tries Ryan Anderson (2) Jack Warnock (1)

Under 15s
Musselburgh U-15's 10 Biggar U-15's 14
After last weeks emphatic win which put Biggar top of the table, the boys travelled to Musselburgh expecting a physical encounter following last years match which ended with ill feeling from the opponents.
It was a bright sunny morning and after the 1 minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday the boys faced up to what turned out to be a marvellous spectacle of rugby.
From the kick off it was clear that the opposition were very fired up and charged in after every ball. Biggar forwards who were immense throughout sucked the ball in and steadied the game and then released ball for the backs to make headway. The tackling from Musselburgh was strong and so yardage was always difficult to make, and when the opposition got possession then Biggar had to stand fast and tackle well to keep them at bay. Some of the decisions were going the way of the opponents and so the boys had to keep focussed.
Midway through the half Nick Began made a tremendous break down the flank and when well stopped on the 25 there was a flying Andrew Sumpster supporting who Nick found with a pass and Andrew with still a lot of work to do burst though for a touchdown beneath the posts which Mark Bertram slotted over.
Over the next few minutes both teams mounted attacks which were strongly repelled until Musselburgh moved the ball wide quickly on the half way and managed to break through wide to run in a try in the corner, which left the kick too difficult to convert. This gave Biggar a 7 - 5 lead at half time.
The second half was just as exciting with Biggar making huge ground through the forwards tight play pushing the opponents back and then bringing in the backs to try to stretch the opposing defence. One large push moved the pack 30 meters down the centre which was much appreciated by the travelling supporters. As the game wore on the physical nature of the game made both sides a little ill-disciplined at times and the ref had to have a word with both captains to keep their teams in control. Biggar managed this far better than the home team and when having control on the attack a clever scissor move released Peter Miller at top speed to crash through for a well earned try which again Mark slotted between the posts.
Musselburgh came rampaging back and although the boys stuck to their task manfully, the opposition breached our defences for another try out wide to set up an exciting and nail biting last 5 mins.
The Biggar boys again took control and kicked deep into Musselburgh territory to keep up the pressure, and when the opponents tried to run out of defence for what was the last play of the game, they were pushed into touch which brought the referee's final whistle. The boys were jubilant for securing a hard fought 14 - 10 win .
When asked to sum up the game the Under 15's Director of Rugby, Ivan Stott said 'that there were 18 man of the matches out on the park today. It was the first time that the boys had played like men. They had been well structured and well disciplined in the face of some decisions and a fired up opposition. They controlled the game and themselves very well'. And finally with a big grin on his face he summed up the feeling of all that were there today with 'bloody marvellous'
S2 : Biggar 15 : Dalziel 14
This week saw Biggar take on Dalziel at Hartreemill, a team that the boys had not encountered since P7 when they convincingly beat us.
Biggar got off to a steady start avoiding the usual wake up call of giving away a try in the first couple of minutes. Indeed, it was Biggar who opened up the scoring after 5 minutes with Danny McAllister chasing and picking up the ball to cross the line following two successive grubber kicks from the half way line.
Play ebbed and flowed with McAllister getting a second try 17 minutes into the game, again showing a chasing pack a clean pair of heels. The only problem with his speed is that his team mates have difficulty in providing support if required.
Just before half time Dalziel capitalised from their superior rucking to get the ball out to the wing and following the evasion of 5 tackles by Biggar carried the ball over the line.
The Biggar forwards seemed reluctant to get involved in the ruck, which resulted in the backs being drawn in, indeed, the smallest player on the park, Reiss Cullen, was more involved in the rucks than any of our backs.
Dalziel put in a slightly stronger performance in the second half scoring three tries and despite a further try from Ryan Anderson and Danny McAllister, the final score line ended on a single point difference.
S1 : Biggar 30 Dalziel 12
This was a very welcome win for the Biggar squad who have had some really tough matches in the last few weeks.
Played in almost perfect conditions but on a sticky pitch Biggar set out their stall from the off, taking ball to Dalziel and forcing them onto the defensive.
Possession was such that the Biggar players at last found themselves in positions to run with the ball and to try things that in recent weeks have been impossible so final has been the opposition tackling. There is still much to work on, particularly the need to be quicker of deed when the ball is loose and to be more aggressive in the contact situation, but this was a big step forward for everyone.
Tries were scored by Lewis Barrie (3), Andrew Orr, Mark Harrison, Gregor Stewart, Simon Denholm, Richard Morgan and Stuart Manock. Stewart (2) and James Barr (1) shared the kicking duties. Good to see Adam Gibb back in action while there was a debut performance for Liam Kerr.
Well done boys!!!

S2 : Currie 6 Biggar 7
Currie has always been a happy hunting ground since P4 for the core of the S2 team, having never been beaten at any age group by the Currie squad.
A one hour delay to kick off on a cold wet day was not welcome, this due to a mix-up with the referee and kick-off times, but eventually the game began and Jack Warnock opened up the scoring for Biggar after 5 minutes following a scrum on the half way line. In doing so he picked up an injury however which meant the kicking duties were passed to Adam Stott, whose kick while on target, fell just short.
Uncharacteristically, Biggar were giving away a significant number of penalties, indeed, one was for asking the referee a simple question at a restart and Currie capitalised on this and within 10 minutes equalised.
Just ahead of the end of the first half following a scrum, in the Biggar half, Calum Campbell in only his second game for Biggar secured the ball and outran the chasing Currie pack. This was subsequently converted by Jack Warnock who had recovered from the earlier injury.
The second half saw the frustrations of the Biggar boys become more evident and following a forward pass by Currie which was subsequently carried over the line for a try, an exchange took place which ended with the referee, walking off the pitch and abandoning the game.
It was disappointing that the game ended in this way given the determination shown by the boys in the adverse weather condition. A subsequent conversation with the Currie coaches indicated that they themselves had issues with the referee in question and from their viewpoint, they had no problem with what had been said.
Scorers : Tries - Jack Warnock (1), Calum Campbell (1)
Conversions - Jack Warnock (1)
S1 Biggar 0 Currie 45
This Currie side has always been a very strong outfit against whom Biggar have always struggled. Add to this the fact that Currie has a squad of 26 boys (2 full teams) are currently unbeaten and that Biggar were a player short due to illness and unavailability, and the task for the S1 squad was of the extremely challenging variety!
The weather was atrocious and generally gave the player in possession the advantage. Given that Currie had such a lot of possession and the rest is immaterial. Try hard though they did, Biggar could not match their hosts and they ran in tries at regular intervals.
Biggar looked bright on restarts - and there were plenty of those - but could not prevent Currie dominance.
Things will turn around and get better though boys!

Midi Rugby
The Midi sides had less fortune as they entertained West of Scotland (S1 and S2), Hawick (U-16) and travelled to North Berwick (U-15).
Indeed all four sides were defeated without managing to cross the line in any game, surely a first ever! The coaches acknowledge that size is an issue with many of the opposing players physically much stronger, but at the same time there was a disappointing lack of application form some, which will be addressed at training.
Somewhat perversely, while the S1 lads were beaten by 31-0 they stuck in better this time round, than has been the case in some previous games. Defence has been a priority recently but the boys worked hard and tackled well throughout. A good time IS coming!!

Boroughmuir 10 Biggar 29
Hamish Wallace was fit again after his foray into WWE Raw (being slam dunked at Currie the other wee), and after a physical training session on Wednesday the boys headed to Edinburgh in good spirit to face Boroughmuir, opponents they have not beaten for many a year.
Having won the toss and electing to have a strong wind at their backs for the first half, some very early pressure saw Biggar win a penalty which Gavin Parker slotted over for an early lead.
From the restart Biggar seemed well up for the tussle and always applied pressure to deny their opposition time. Tackling seemed strong and energetic and the boys were making good use of the wind, kicking long into the Boroughmuir half to keep their hosts on the backfoot. Biggar stole good ball just in their own half and Parker took off, breaking many tackles to elude the full back for a magnificent try which he duly converted.
Boroughmuir regrouped and eased their way up the park until their large No 8 broke through to bring the scores closer. Biggar raised the pace again and strong running from all areas saw Paul Davidson eventually crash through with many of the opposition in his wake but unable to stop him. Straight from the kick off Biggar won the ball back and Mark Bertram powered through with one of his powerful jinksy runs. Again Parker added the conversion to give Biggar a marvellous 22-5 lead at half time.
With the wind against it was always going to be more difficult, but the opposition did not use it to the devastating effect that Biggar had, and midway through the half Paul Davidson found space wide and powered over the try line, but when trying to get under the posts was very nearly held up. Again Parker had his kicking boots on and slotted over the conversion against a difficult strong wind.
Boroughmuir managed a consolation try towards the end but as the final whistle went the Biggar boys cheered with jubilation as the 29-10 win obviously meant a great deal to them.
In his summation Biggar coach Jim Wallace claimed that 'This week the boys listened and did what the coaches had told them' (that's pretty good, once in 3 years). 'A tremendous display, and now the boys might realise that when they turn up switched on and in the right frame of mind they are a match for anyone'.

S1
Cambuslang had been scheduled to make the trip to Biggar on Sunday but a rugby camp prevented them from doing so and while there was no game available for the S2 side, GHA stepped in at short notice so that the S1 had a game.
In the end this was another hefty defeat for the Biggar side who struggled to match the strength of the visiting side.
On a positive note however, the side gained more vital experience, particularly those new to the game. In addition a total of 17 players were involved - this a record for the age-group who must remain positive as there is a great deal of potential within their ranks.
Scrum half Richard Morgan ran in from half way following a tremendous touchline break for what was a consolation score, James Barr kicking the conversion. GHA managed 3 tries in each third however to record a 31-4 victory.
Parents and players are reminded that the scheduled games at Heriots for the S1 and S2 age groups have been cancelled due to the October week holidays.

Under 15s - Currie 26 Biggar 12
S1's v Musselburgh
Biggar entertained Musselburgh on Sunday, and despite sound preparation the lads were once again slow starters, the visitors running in 3 tries in the first third of the game.
Biggar's tackling was not up to scratch in this third and while it improved as the game continued it is an area requiring some attention.
The game was however fairly even for the rest of the game, Biggar replying via a captain's try from Simon Denholm who outstripped the 'Burgh defence from some 60 metres to score an excellent try. James Barr converted but Biggar were unable to add to their tally, 'Burgh running in a further two scores for a 19-4 win.
This Sunday Biggar entertain Cambuslang and hope to welcome back those players unable to play this weekend because of the September holiday.

S2's : Biggar 22 Hawick 14
In what was always going to be a hard fought match, Hawick took the lead after having been camped out in the Biggar half for the first 10 minutes of the game. Biggar however came straight back into the game and following a hard contested battle, evened the score line just before the end of the first of three 20 minute periods.
The second and third periods saw Biggar start to play more creative rugby and they were able to gain the upper hand with Daniel Blackman and Danny McAllister both showing their usual turn of speed carrying the ball over the line showing the opposition a clean pair of heels.
Scorers : Tries - Danny McAllister (2) Daniel Balckman (3) Aird Jardine (1)
Conversions - Jack Warnock (4)
S1's : Biggar 6 Hawick 18
After the highs last week in Dumfries and an excellent mid-week training session hopes were high that the S1's would come flying out of the traps when they entertained Hawick on Sunday.
Unfortunately however the squad were initially really lethargic and let Hawick in for two early scores.
A much improved second period saw Biggar tackle the honours by 2-1 courtesy of tries from Stuart Manock and James Barr, but with Hawick able to switch players at will due to their massive 23 man squad fatigue inevitably played its part and the visitors ran in 3 unanswered scores in the third period.
Plenty positives however with new boys Mark Ewart and Paul Riley showing up well and with the squad displaying a very positive approach to the game.
Thanks to SVQ Hani Darwish for refereeing the contest.

Under 16s - Biggar 14 Lasswade 19
The Under 16s fought hard in a very evenly matched game against Lasswade. Ahead in the dying minutes of the game thanks to two tries from Andy Fleming, both converted by Graham Jamieson, Biggar were not able to hold on for the win as Lasswade scored the winner in the final play of the game.
S1 - Dumfries 3 Biggar 31
It has taken some time but the S1 squad recorded a very well-deserved win on Sunday. Pitched again against a larger side physically Biggar opened up with an excellent score from scrum half Richard Morgan, this within 20 seconds of the game starting!
Gregor Stewart added the first of his four conversions before scoring a try himself. Better was to come with tries from Martin Hunter, a brace from William Grieve (who easily played his best ever game) and captain on the day Stewart Manock, Lewis Barrie (grandson of ex-Biggar 1st XV prop Stewart) and finally Morgan again.
Biggar's organisation, support play and handling was a joy to behold and should give all some real confidence prior to this Sundays visit by Hawick

Under 15s - Gala R.T. 0 Biggar 38
Wow Where did the summer go? Something must have happened because all the boys sprouted a good few inches and all the coaches sprouted a few more grey hairs.
The under 16's though were on the wrong end of a heavy defeat, going down to Gala R.T 64-0.
S2 : Biggar 16 : Whitecraigs 7
In the first home game of the season, Biggar played host to Whitecraigs, a team the boys had never met before in previous seasons and as such they were an unknown quantity. They did however have a number of large players, but fortunately this is not something, which intimidates the Biggar boys.
From kick off, both teams seemed equally matched, and for the first 6 minutes, despite most of the play taking place in the Whitecraigs half, Biggar were unable to capitalise until Danny McAllister made a break to put the first points on the board for Biggar. The second half saw Biggar run in two more tries, all converted by Jack Warnock and at half time Biggar were twelve points ahead.
Despite the scoreline, the opposition's heads did not go down and they came back strong at the start of the second half, but a good Biggar defence managed to keep them at bay until late into the second half, when they got their first points.
Biggar quickly came back with the play moving into Whitecraigs 22. Following a ruck 5 yards out Colin Chapman cleared the ball to Craig Stewart who ran it over the line.
In the closing minutes, Whitecraigs scored again, however, it was too late to make any real difference.
Scorers : Tries - Danny McAllister (2), Ryan Anderson (1), Craig Stewart (1)
Conversions - Jack Warnock (4)

S1 Ayr 24 Biggar 7
In their first outing at this age group Biggar had to contend with a full sized pitch, a bare minimum of 13 in their squad and a physically much larger Ayr unit. As such it was always going to be difficult and so it proved, Ayr scoring with their first move of the game.
Fortunately the Biggar lads are made of stern stuff and this did not dishearten them, a try to being their almost immediate repost. James Barr added the conversion via the cross bar. The sides exchanged another score each, Simon Denholm notching the Biggar try, this taking the score at the end of the first third to 8-7.
Unfortunately Biggar were unable to add to their tally while Ayr ran in a handful of tries most of which were from breakouts with their very powerful pack responsible.
The heads never dropped however and considering that Ayr were able to make several changes due to the size of their squad and Biggar soldiered on with just their 13, all credit must go to the Biggar lads. Particular note to be made of newcomers Adam Gibb and Lewis Barrie who both worked very hard in what was their first ever competitive game.
All Midi sides are on the lookout for new players so if on reading this you think you would like to play, then training is on Wednesday evenings from 7-8.30pm at Hartreemill.
S2 : Ayr 25 : Biggar 9 .
In the first outing of the new season the S2 boys travelled to Ayr. This was never going to be an easy start to the year, having met this team twice at S1 level and having been beaten on both occasions.
Ayr quickly opened up the scoring running over the line within 90 seconds of the start. Throughout the first half, despite winning the majority of the line outs and scrums, Ayr managed to run in another 3 tries before half time.
Despite Ayr having a substantial lead at the start of the second half, at no time did the Biggar look disheartened and their perseverance eventually paid off with Danny McAllister crossing the line to put the first score on the board for Biggar. Ayr ran in a further 3 tries but as they began to tire, Biggar were able to capitalise with Ryan Anderson adding 2 more tries.
Regardless of the final score, the boys can be extremely proud of their opening performance and it looks like it could be a good season.
Scorers : Tries - Danny McAllister (1), Ryan Anderson (2)
