The Saltire Series  - a programme started in 2006, enables players from the youth section of Biggar RFC to gain valuable experience through interaction with rugby players from other nations. Learning from others is considered to be a most valuable benefit to our youngsters and the opportunity to host teams from other nations or to travel to other countries is surely part of an education programme not to be missed.

Biggar has long operated a programme of touring sides at different age group levels, from senior sides down to youth level. These trips have always been a useful learning experience as well as a chance to enjoy a different cultural experience. It is to be hoped that we shall continue to provide such opportunity to all, where at all possible

Where possible the series involves fixtures based around an international match played either at home or abroad. Our youngsters have the opportunity to represent their Club, their families and not least themselves, both as individuals and as part of a disciplined team. They learn to look out for each other and to appreciate the worth of others, both young and old alike. And, of course, they learn to enjoy themselves alongside people from different nations.

During season 2006 - 2007 fixtures were arranged and held with Carlilse, Chippenham and Ormskirk of the Rugby Football Union and with Portadown of the Irish Rugby Football Union. Biggar also sent an Under-14 team to compete in the Scottish International Festival of Rugby in Ayr where each of the 4 home unions were represented. Our team emerged victorious with the Scottish Challenge Cup - a wonderful fillip for the team and the Club.

In season 2007 - 2008, further home and away fixtures are planned, to include a trip to Ireland in late February for the under 13 (S1) and under 15 (S3) squads. Two or three games are planned as well as taking in the Ireland v Scotland International in Dublin.

The teams do everything they can to raise funds for such ventures but also look to support from the Community. If you believe you can help in any way, no matter how small, then please do get in touch with one of the Midi coaches or any Committee member. All help, whether financial or otherwise, will be gratefully received.
